Intended Project OutcomeEdit
- Wiki users will have multiple, simple ways to contact each other to improve the wiki.
The wiki currently includes communication tools such as Message Walls, a wiki-styled forum, a Community Portal, and page comment options. Support tools include a user directory, automatic linking to wall messages and page comments, and the optional ability to leave links to user pages.
Note: The Wikia Forum Extension is scheduled to be added next week, altering this section.
Our current communication tools can be difficult to find. Our method of identifying them does not make them obvious and simple to the general public. Some tools require a good amount of wiki knowledge before they can be used effectively.
Why is this important?Edit
The present situation does not foster the type of collaborative culture which would benefit our wiki. Any possibility of improving inter-user communication should be seriously considered.
Wikia's Forum Extension could be installed according to schedule.
- Our Main Page could provide simplified links to wiki communication points.
- Our category tree could be simplified to improve general user comprehension.
Since our wiki has not established a definitive guideline regarding such a project, I am posting this discussion topic for user feedback. Possible solutions should be modified with additional reader ideas. Definitive action proposals will be posted for specific feedback as necessary. Please add your comments and concerns below.
I happen to like the way wiki news items can be centrally distributed using user blog pages. One example of this can be found at Nukapedia.
While I was reviewing how Nukapedia made good use of user blog pages as a news feed, I happened to come across the way they modified their wiki-styled forum to meet their needs. I actually prefer their layout mod over the default layout we have in our new forum extension. I do, however, like very much how the extension inserts a discussion quick link at the bottom of each content page...very nice.
I reverted our forum to our historic version after noticing several Wikia sites with improved formatting which provided all we need from our forums. I will plan on modifying our forums to incorporate those benefits in the near future.
As of today, our wiki-styled forum has been remodeled to incorporate some of the improved layout ideas gleaned from other Wikia sites. While this improves its appearance, we still need better ways to integrate it into our communication pathways.
